WALD is a research project focused on natural and local ingredients for textile screen printing. From the outset, we aimed to develop natural and locally sourced inks. The goal was to achieve dark colors by finding an alternative to pigments derived from petrochemicals, such as carbon black. The appeal of these renewable and bio-sourced inks also lies in the richness of their shades, which provide black with greater depth, warmth, and intensity.

This research was initiated during winter, when we took advantage of this moment to question our design practice. How could we initiate a project using materials from our immediate environment? This is how, during our initial experiments, we began working with the bark of dead trees and collaborating with forestry operations as well as woodworkers to make use of their waste. By using different wood species such as oak, chestnut, or spruce, we have managed to create a palette made by the neighboring forests: subtle blacks and grays, shifting towards purple, ochre, or brown.

We developed a sustainable and desirable ink with a very simple method. By soaking tree bark in water, their high tannin content reveals dark shades, which can be fixed using a mordant sur as ferrous sulfate. Finally, by introducing a natural thickening agent, we achieved the optimal consistency for screen printing. In collaboration with Chloé Hercé.
